600 Home Runs for A-Rod

The New York Yankees are the most successful sports franchise to date. They have produced some of baseball’s most revered players and have had a virtual monopoly over hall of fame players since their inception. Well, get ready to add another all time great player to that list, Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez became the seventh slugger to reach 600 home runs and now he is only 10 homers away from catching Sammy Sossa’s mark for sixth place on the all time home run list. At 35, A-Rod is the youngest player to hit 600 home runs, comparable to only Babe Ruth, who reached his 600 at 36.

There is a dash of controversy however surrounding the New York native. Rodriguez admitted to using steroids while playing with theTexas Rangers (2001-2003), during which time he crushed 156 home runs.

Meanwhile, a larger portion of chatter has surrounded the overall work ethic of A-Rod, which has now certainly paid-off in full. Former New York Yankee Bucky Dent admitted himself that the 600th home run “might not have the same impact” due to his admitted steroid use, but still Dent commented that Rodriguez’s achievement is a tremendous point in baseball history. Dent’s motto of “600 is 600,” became the theme which tamed the arguments against this milestone.

Rodriguez’s 600th came as he swung on a first inning 2-0 pitch from Toronto’s Shaun Marcum. Lifting the ball to dead center field, the Yankee slugger mildly smiled and than grinned wide as he made it to home plate. At the time, A-Rod was in a severe 0-12 slump and had reached a dismal 0-46 homerless at-bats. His last home run before the 600th was on July 22.

The Yankees’ season is looking promising once again as they lead both the American and National Leagues in winning percentage at 622%. Think you know how the Yankees will play during the playoffs?
