The stars of world snooker are showcasing their talents in Glasgow and despite some top players already falling by the wayside, the field remains extremely strong and highly competitive amongst those still fighting it out for the £100,000 first prize. This year, and for the first time in a world snooker ranking event, amateurs were welcome to enter and had to overcome two qualification rounds to assure their place in the main draw.
The format of the World Open has been adjusted to make matches best of 5 frames until the final which will be best of 9, and the quick play will no doubt benefit both Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan and Neil ‘The Thunder from Down Under’ Robertson. The ginger hair atop the Nugget’s head may have turned to grey, but seeing as though he’s only 8 years from getting his bus pass we’ll forgive him. The quality of snooker, it seems, remains of the highest order – a fact to which his latest victim will surely testify.
At 52, and making his 30th appearance at the World Championship, it’s almost as if he never left. Saying that Steve Davis was an outside bet (400-1) at the start of the tournament is an understatement, but Romford Slim is now in the quarter final, having disposed of one of the tournament favourites with a frame to spare, after an enthralling
