Ligue 1 football season gets underway
The 2010/11 football season has already started in Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and many more countries, but the first major league to kick-off will be the French Ligue 1. Although secondary to the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga in terms of attraction, it has had more than its fair share of drama and excitement over the last fewyears, giving football fans everything they desire (and you everything you want in terms of football betting).
It wasn’t like that for over half a decade, when Lyon controlled the league, winning a record 7 championship titles on the trot. Then came Bordeaux in the 2008/09 season, shuffling the cards and leaving Lyon overwhelmed and resigned to only a 3rd place finish behind runners-up Marseille. It was l’OM themselves that ended a drought of 17 years with an impressive championship title, this time leaving Lyon disappointed in 2nd place, and previous champs Bordeaux wayback in 6th place.
This comes to show the most appealing feature of any football league – the true contest. Granted, you can’t suddenly expect teams like Lorient, Nancy or Sochaux to take the title, but the fact remains – it isn’t a two horse race as is the case in Spain and even England, or the pseudo-contest in the Bundesliga, where the title is only ever Bayern Munich’s to lose. With the recent dominance of Inter, Italy has also become a one team show.
So whether Marseille start a dynasty of their own, or Lyon jump back to the top, or Bordeaux rise to claim back the title, or some other impressive names, like Auxerre or PSG emerge from the shadows, Ligue 1 is set to bring the neutral fan what he will be looking for. Plus, it allows for some interesting bettingopportunities.
With some big stars along with promising young talents, great venues and a lot of atmosphere and passion, Ligue 1 promises, unlike Alain Barrière’s song, that it’ll remain beautiful in the future too.
