2011 NFL Kicks Off
Out of the 32 NFL games that marked the beginning of the 2010 season only one has stood out so far.
The San Diego Chargers are looking for sweet redemption after being defeated by the New York Jets during the 2010 playoffs. This time around they headed to Kansas City to tackle the Chiefs and gain a fresh start. As the two teams battled to open Monday night football season, the Chargers disappointed as they fell against the strong Kansas City offense.
Although, they were favored by football betting odds as the away favourite prior to the game, the Chargers were ill prepared to handle the thorough onslaught and fell short in answering relentless KC drives. Loosing 21-14, the Chargers head coach, Norv Turner swallowed his words after saying he believed the 2011 Chargers would be the best yet.
Despite the facts, no Marcus McNeill, left tackle, no Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson and no Pro Bowl Kassim Osgood, the Chargers played honorably but without presenting much of a threat.
At the start of the first quarter, the Chargers tried to set the pace of the game by being overly aggressive on defense, and using their rushing game on offense. The first quarter was rain free and enabled the Chargers to gain decent footing, but as the Chargers began licking their wounds the weather turned for the worse, the team followed in the same direction.
After the game, Coach Turner’s somber mood was lifted with a short spurt of cynical optimism by saying, “I believe we can replace anyone who’s not here.” He was of course referring to the former players while responding to criticism from writers, pundits and sports bettors; it is now a shared view that Turner’s shrewd dealings have led the Chargers into a downward spiral.
With another 15 games to go, San Diego will need to reassess their game if they’re going to be considered a true contender for this year’s Super Bowl.
