Rhinos against Warriors in Challenge Cup Final
The Final of the Challenge Cup sees the Wigan Warriors take on the Leeds Rhinos. Despite Wigan being the most successful side in the Challenge Cup with 17 wins they haven’t actually tasted cup glory since 2002. Leeds have won it 11 times with the last victory coming in 1999.
Led by Kevin Sinfeld and Jamie Peacock, the Rhinos have a talented side. As do Wigan who boast the likes of Sean O’Loughin, Pat Richards, Ryan Hoffman and Brett Finch.
Wigan are currently top of the Super League ladder and are having a great year. Their path to the final began with a 52-0 thumping of Barrow Raiders. They followed this up with a narrow 26-22 win over the Bradford Bulls. They smashed Warrington in the quarter finals before sneaking past St Helens in the semi’s.
Leeds began with a win over the Crusaders and then took out Harlequins and Hull. In the semi-finals they were really put to the test and required extra time to overcome Castleford. Leeds are in 7th place on the Super League ladder and would love nothing more than to avenge the back to back Challenge Cup final losses they suffered at the hands of Wigan in the early 1990s. They lost the final last year to Warrington and a win here would be the perfect tonic.
