Introducing André Villas-Boas

June 29th, 2011 by admin

He may look and sound a little like the Special One but André Villas-Boas is no Jose Mourinho. Yes, he led Porto to the Primeira Liga title and then success in the Europa League but this competition is no Champions League. There, they had to play the likes of Besiktas, Rapid Vienna, CSKA Sofia and Seville – good teams but nowhere near the calibre of the teams Chelsea will have to face next season, teams such as Lyon, Bayern Munich, Milan and reigning champions Barcelona.
Villas-Boas is still a relative novice to management, with the Chelsea chapter marking only his third year in such a position. Mourinho was similar in this regard when he came to Chelsea but he was 10 years older and the said 10 years gave him a lot of extra experience. How will Villas-Boas handle dealing with players who are only a few months younger than him and how will the players respond to his personality and methods?

Mourinho loved locking horns with his closest rivals in Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. How will  young Villas-Boas fare on that front? Add Mancini, Dalglish and Redknapp into the equation and Villas-Boas probably knows better than most that there’ll be no honeymoon, rather he will be expected to deliver from the outset. He is managing one of the highest-profile clubs in the world – one of the few clubs which not only compete in the Champions League, but have a realistic chance of winning it and for the fans and chairman Abramovich, failure is not an option.

The Premier League – Looking for the Top Club

December 9th, 2010 by Lukas B

A window was opened for Chelsea and Arsenal to climb into the top position as a result of the absence of Manchester United from weekend play. The 16th match day of the English Premier League brought more adjustments at the top of the points table.

Arsenal’s victory against Fulham, led by two of Samir Nasri’s superb goals, pushed the Gunners past Man Utd. and enabled them to reach 32 points from 16 games. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s performance at home against 15th place Everton proved less than successful in increasing their standings. Chelsea currently remains two points behind Arsenal’s 32 and is in desperate need for a victory, either at home or away.

Have The Mighty Fallen?

October 5th, 2010 by Dan S

Honest Arsenal fans would have written-off their side’s chances of leaving Stamford Bridge with 3 points before the start of the season. The less optimistic fans would have been delighted and relieved to get a draw there and the more pessimistic Gooners would hardly flinch at the notion of zero points out of six against the Champions, provided results elsewhere were respectable. It’s completely feasible for a team to lose twice to Chelsea and still go on to win the league, but when newly-promoted teams beat you in your own back yard, questions need to be asked.

True, Arsenal are missing some key first-teamers like Walcott, Vermaelen, Van Persie and World Cup winning skipper Cesc Fabregas but, with Chelsea missing the services of Frank Lampard in midfield, Arsenal trio Wilshere, Diaby and Song would have hoped to benefit. Instead, the inexperienced but hugely talented Ramires shone in the middle for the Blues and Essien was his usual dominant self. Read More »

Stand up for the Champions

May 4th, 2010 by Lukas B

We’re at the business end of the domestic football season, and whilst it’s all over in Scotland, Holland and Belgium, there’s still everything to play for in two of Europe’s biggest leagues. Internazionale are chasing a very realistic treble and with only Roma and Bayern Munich standing in their way, don’t be surprised to see images of a smug Jose Mourinho celebrating like a man possessed (again) all over the back pages during the coming weeks.

Meanwhile in Spain, where Mourinho is nicknamed the ‘Translator’ and definitely not the ‘Special One’, Real Madrid are looking to break the hearts of rivals Barcelona, who if pipped to the title will end the season with nothing to show for all of their glorious attacking football. Read More »
