What We Learned from the First Leg of the Euro Playoff

November 21st, 2011 by Lukas B

It would appear as though three of the four Euro playoff matches have already been settled following the anticlimactic ending of the first leg. Croatia played in Turkey and returned home with a three-goal lead. Thanks to Ivica Olic, they managed to score in the first two minutes, taking the wind out of the sails of the Turks, who just couldn’t seem to get into the match with no shot-on goals. Should Croatia score once in Zagreb, Turkey will need to score 4.

Guus Hiddink may have taken Russia to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, but his outlook for Euro 2012 is not as bright, and he will now be turning his attention to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup instead.  Alongside the Netherlands, Hungary, Romania, Estonia and Andorra in Group D, Turkey’s future looms tense as Estonia and Hungary have upped their respective games significantly.

The Czech Republic had a 2-0 win over Montenegro. The visitors would have been devastated to give up a second goal deep into injury time. A 1-0 loss wouldn’t have been a disaster but their job is infinitely more difficult now.

Ireland look like they will be returning to tournament football following a 4-0 win in Estonia. Keith Andrews set the pace, scoring an early goal shortly before Andrei Stepanov was sent off. Ireland scored two more in the second half, following which another Estonian player was sent off.  A Robbie Keane penalty brought home a fourth goal, pushing the Irish through to victory.
The Bosnia Herzegovina – Portugal match ended in a disappointing tie of 0-0, as Vedad Ibišević missed a great opportunity to break the deadlock in the final minutes of the game. The return leg in Portugal is finely poised, with Portugal having home-field advantage and Bosnia hoping for an away-goal to break their spirits. On paper, the Portuguese should have been far stronger with the likes of Ronaldo, Nani, Pepe, Joao Moutinho, Raul Meireles and Helder Postiga at their disposal, but the Bosnians held firm.

Summer Transfer Window Closes Shut

September 11th, 2011 by Michael B.

Following the loss of Cesc Fabregas and the 8-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, much focus was on Arsenal and how they would respond. The Gunners signed Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker, Park Chu-Young, Andre dos Santos and have borrowed Yossi Benayoun from Chelsea.  Fabregas’ sale for £35m was the second biggest transaction of the period, the first and third being Manchester City’s acquisition of Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri respectively. The other big deals involved the usual suspects – Chelsea taking Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku, Liverpool signing Stuart Downing and Jordan Henderson and Manchester United picking up David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones. Opening Round of Premier League Action

August 18th, 2011 by admin

Not that many goals in the opening week of the Premier League with just 18 from nine games. There were only four wins – with Bolton, Wolves and both Manchester sides claiming maximum points and, if they didn’t know before, QPR and Swansea now know just how much of a fight they’re going to have to give if they are to avoid immediate relegation after both were humbled 4-0 on initiation day.

Chelsea were well held by Stoke, whilst Liverpool could only get a point against Sunderland despite dominating for long periods in a match where Suarez missed a penalty and Seb Larsson scored a cracker. Arsenal played Newcastle in what was a fiery game and, in what has become almost customary during the Arsene Wenger era, new signing Gervinho was sent off after a scuffle with Joey Barton.

There was pressure on Manchester City to start well against newcomers Swansea and this increased when it was still 0-0 at half-time. They responded well, however, with four second half goals courtesy of a Sergio Aguero debut brace and one each for David Silva and Edin Dzeko.

United were below par against WBA, but did enough to win. There were some worrying signs from new goalkeeper David de Gea and injuries to Rio Ferdinard, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Rafael meaning the defence is already stretched in terms of cover.

Looking ahead to next week, the biggest games see Arsenal host Liverpool while Tottenham begin their season, albeit a week late, at Old Trafford.

Sergio Agüero Heads to Manchester City

August 3rd, 2011 by admin

The Premier League is known as the home of the best players in the world and it’s clear that such a trend is set to continue with Manchester City’s acquisition of Sergio Agüero from Primera Liga outfit Atletico Madrid. The cross-town rivals of champions Manchester United are showing that they intend to remain a ‘top four’ club and compete for the very highest honours – including the Champions League – and this £38 million capture of a top young international with tons of experience is a clear sign of it.

Agüero may only be 23 but already he has enjoyed a glittering career; He is the youngest player to play in the Argentine first division and he won the U20 World Cup in both 2005 and 2007. He won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and also happens to be Maradona’s son….in- law! In other words, he is footballing royalty and commands a great deal of respect.

He began his career at Independiente before moving to Atletico Madird where he played for five years.
He was a consistent goal scorer there, scoring 74 times and providing countless assists. Wearing the Number 16 shirt he will team up with the likes of David Silva, Emmanuel Adebayor, Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli, as part of a strike force that could trouble even the greatest defenders in the game. This is indeed a talented squad and, if Mancini can get them to properly gel, one which should challenge in all competitions.

First up is the Community Shield and a date with reigning champions and arch rivals Manchester United, after which we should have a fair idea of just how much of a threat the Blues might be.

Copa America 2011 – New World Order

July 19th, 2011 by admin

The Copa America has been tipped on its head with both holders Brazil and hosts Argentina eliminated prior to the semi-final stage, thus leaving the tournament wide open.
Brazil and Argentina have contested the last two finals of the Copa America and so it’ll be strange without them, but they can only blame themselves; both had sluggish tournaments, never really looked good and could not even take the chances gifted to them – a required trait amongst the bigger teams.

Brazil were lucky to draw with Paraguay the first time they played but the second time around the Paraguayans took them to penalties where the boys in yellow failed to convert a single one. The shootout was farcical and could be cited as one of the reasons Mano Menezes doesn’t last too long at his post.

It’s hard for Argentina to take much glee from Brazil’s woes as they were equally unimpressive. They only managed a win against invited minnows Costa Rica and then couldn’t disguise their sloppy shortcomings against a sharp Uruguay side – all the while playing with an extra man for 48 minutes after Perez was dismissed in the first half. After 120 minutes there was still no winner and so it went to penalties where Carlos Tevez’s miss was the difference between the two sides.  Again there will be much conjecture about Lionel Messi who didn’t score a solitary goal in the tournament despite netting 53 times in 55 club appearances last season.

Now Peru meet Uruguay in one semi final with Venezuela facing Paraguay in the other. It’s anyone’s tournament and we can’t wait to see who’s victorious.

Where will Cesc and Samir Land When the Music Stops?

July 13th, 2011 by admin

The Summer Transfer market is a case of musical chairs. Where will Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri end up when things are all said and done?

In the case of Fabregas it’s a more delicate situation. Born in Barcelona, he was signed by the Barcelona Academy at the age of 10. He went to Arsenal when he was 16 on a promise of first-team football and broke into Arsene Wenger’s side shortly after. Since Thierry Henry’s departure in 2007, Fabregas has been the club captain.

He won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 alongside several Barcelona players, many of whom are childhood friends so, obviously, there is a strong pull to return home, and with Barca winning trophies left, right and centre, there couldn’t be a better time to move.

Nasri signed for Arsenal from Marseille (and relative obscurity!) in 2008. He had a great season last year and wants to capitalize on that, or at least that’s what he’s being advised to do. There are reports that he will sign for Manchester City who are, in turn, prepared to treble what he is currently earning at Arsenal, although Nasri himself doesn’t seem fussed and, as speculation increased about champions Manchester United expressing their interest in acquiring the Frenchman’s services, Nasri was with his Arsenal teammates on their tour of the Far East.

If Arsenal were to sell two of their best midfielders, the negative message that would send to the fans may be irreversible and their future amongst the Premiership’s elite could be in jeopardy but, however this unfolds we’ll know everything by the close of the transfer window at the very latest…

Ferguson Revamps United Squad

July 5th, 2011 by admin

How do you define success? Would winning the league and losing in the final of the Champions League be considered such? For most clubs yes but for Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson, this may not necessarily be the case.

Fergie has already been working hard on bolstering the United squad. Young Spanish keeper, David de Gea comes in to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar, who’s hung up his gloves after 6 hugely successful seasons at Old Trafford. De Gea has impressed many with his performances for Athletico Madrid and more recently the triumphant Spanish U-21’s and Ferguson will be hoping he can slot in seamlessly as United’s no.1.

Ferguson has to make up for the loss of the terminally injured Owen Hargreaves who was released prematurely from his contract, but more importantly the ioconic Paul Scholes, who’s been nothing short of tremendous during his long tenure at Old Trafford.

Phil Jones was signed from Blackburn Rovers to add some steel to United’s core and has the added skill of being able to play in both defence and midfield. Jones was impressive as he featured in 26 Rovers matches last year and will provide United with a boost of energy and spark at the back.

Talking of spark, Ashley Young was brought in from Aston Villa for a fee believed to be in the region of £16million. He is a quality player who will only improve by playing for United under the stewardship of Sir Alex and his coaching staff. Last season, Young played 34 games for Villa, scoring 7 goals and assisting a great many more.

Signings of this caliber would be the envy of the rest of the league and there may yet be more to come.

Introducing André Villas-Boas

June 29th, 2011 by admin

He may look and sound a little like the Special One but André Villas-Boas is no Jose Mourinho. Yes, he led Porto to the Primeira Liga title and then success in the Europa League but this competition is no Champions League. There, they had to play the likes of Besiktas, Rapid Vienna, CSKA Sofia and Seville – good teams but nowhere near the calibre of the teams Chelsea will have to face next season, teams such as Lyon, Bayern Munich, Milan and reigning champions Barcelona.
Villas-Boas is still a relative novice to management, with the Chelsea chapter marking only his third year in such a position. Mourinho was similar in this regard when he came to Chelsea but he was 10 years older and the said 10 years gave him a lot of extra experience. How will Villas-Boas handle dealing with players who are only a few months younger than him and how will the players respond to his personality and methods?

Mourinho loved locking horns with his closest rivals in Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. How will  young Villas-Boas fare on that front? Add Mancini, Dalglish and Redknapp into the equation and Villas-Boas probably knows better than most that there’ll be no honeymoon, rather he will be expected to deliver from the outset. He is managing one of the highest-profile clubs in the world – one of the few clubs which not only compete in the Champions League, but have a realistic chance of winning it and for the fans and chairman Abramovich, failure is not an option.

Football Musical Chairs Begins

June 22nd, 2011 by Titan Bet

There may not be much on-the-field action going on in football right now but there is plenty going on off it, not least with the opening up of the transfer window. Which means speculation and gossip and rumours galore.

Will this be the year that Cesc Fabregas finally goes back to Barcelona? They made several overtures to him last year but he and Arsenal resisted. Who knows if he could do it again? Think of their live football betting odds if he is playing alongside Xavi, Iniesta and Messi?

Tottenham’s Gareth Bale helped steer his club to the last eight of the Champions League but this year won’t be playing in the tournament unless he leaves. Will that prove enough of a lure and, if so, who could possibly afford him?

Similarly, Harry Redknapp has placed a massive price tag on the head of Luka Modric in an attempt to deter other clubs from tabling unsettling bids. Three years ago, Spurs paid a club record £16.5 million for the Croatian, money which now appears to have been very well spent.

The good Football betting odds appear to be leaning towards Brazilian sensation Neymar heading to Chelsea. Their deep pockets see them associated with nearly every player that comes on the market. The same also goes for Manchester City who are now playing in the Champions League and despite stiff competition for the young Chilean’s signature, City are one of the favourited to land Alexis Sanchez from Udinese. Don’t be surprised if Sanchez is the first of a number of signings they make before the start of the next campaign.

One of the things about the transfer window is that most of the activity tends to happen at the end. So watch this space and pace yourself until then.

A Vicious Defeat and a Sweet Victory

November 23rd, 2010 by Lukas B

How do you blow a victory in the most agonizing way, ask the Houston Texans. On Monday afternoon at the New York Jets Meadowlands Stadium the Jets took on the Houston Texans in a game which was essential for the Jets to win.

The intensity peaked at the end of the third quarter. Houston was down 7-23 but began a surprising push to take a 27-23 lead with only 55 seconds left in the quarter; this offensive surge proved to be the last time they would come close to victory. By the end of the fourth quarter the Jets were in control of the final possession and had the ball at their 28 yard line with only 49 seconds remaining. Adding to the thrilling game was the amount of timeouts remaining for the Jets by the end of the 4th quarter: Zero. Read More »
