The Premier League - Looking for its Top Team

A window was opened for Chelsea and Arsenal to climb into the top position as a result of the absence of Manchester United from weekend play. The 16th match day of the English Premier League brought more adjustments at the top of the points table.

Arsenal’s victory against Fulham, led by two of Samir Nasri’s superb goals, pushed the Gunners past Man Utd. and enabled them to reach 32 points from 16 games. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s performance at home against 15th place Everton proved less than successful in increasing their standings. Chelsea currently remains two points behind Arsenal’s 32 and is in desperate need for a victory, either at home or away.

It appears that the bottom part of the league have been able, mainly by default, to stay within range of a top spot. It was only a few weeks ago that Sunderland was ranked at the bottom and are now in a race for a European place. The league is in a fluid stage, especially as the regular top contenders remain in a tight race.

Chelsea’s one win out of five and Man Utd.’s multiple draws has enabled Arsenal to gain top footing, but after the 16th match day the top of the league remains unclaimed. The comprehensive competitive level of this year’s league was recently commented on by Sir Alex Ferguson who stated, “the standard has improved, the lower teams are getting better”.

Ferguson’s candid assessment may be a result of the performances of three recently promoted clubs: Blackpool, Newcastle, and West Brom. It is uncertain where the bottom rung will place in the end but all are fairing off better than expected, especially West Brom. Blackpool and Newcastle maybe only four points away from trouble but are still in a better place than the league had expected.
